Training: Out-of-Plane Behaviour of Masonry Walls

This full-day technical training course was developed and delivered to provide engineers with a solid understanding of the assessment and verification of the out-of-plane behaviour of masonry walls, a locally relevant failure mechanism.

The programme included an introduction to typical failure mechanisms and an overview of how the topic is addressed in national and international standards. In addition, several assessment methods were covered in greater detail, including the approaches proposed by Paulay & Priestley and rigid body kinematics.

In the practical part of the course, a masonry case study building was analysed, hand calculations were carried out and the results were compared with a nonlinear model developed in 3Muri. This provided participants with a consistent understanding of both the underlying mechanics and their practical implementation.

The training course has received very positive feedback. To date, more than 63 engineers from around 50 engineering consultancies in Switzerland and Austria have participated, highlighting its strong practical relevance and clear added value.
