Safak specialises in the assessment and preservation of existing structures. His professional focus includes seismic safety, the structural safety of underground parking garages with particular emphasis on punching shear, and durability-related challenges.
After several years in engineering practice, his work increasingly focused on risk-based approaches to the seismic assessment of existing structures. In late 2023, he completed his PhD at ETH Zurich with a thesis entitled “Risk-Based Seismic Assessment of Existing Unreinforced Masonry Buildings in Switzerland”.
Alongside his work at LEO Consulting, he is principal lecturer and programme coordinator of the continuing education programme CAS ETH in Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting (CAS ETH SER) at ETH Zurich. He is also actively involved in standards development, serving as chair of the working group responsible for the Swiss National Annex to Eurocode 6 (EN 1996) (Parts 1-1, 1-2 and 2) and as a member of the SIA 266 standards committee.

Yunus has been involved in the assessment and retrofitting of existing structures for many years. His areas of expertise include punching shear and seismic safety, structural strengthening, as well as non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring.
He obtained his PhD from ETH Zurich in 2018 with a dissertation entitled “Long-Term Resistance of Gradient Anchorage for Prestressed CFRP Strips in Structural Concrete Retrofitting” and was a member of the working group responsible for the new SIA 166 standard on externally bonded reinforcement. Since completing his PhD, he has been working in engineering practice, focusing on the assessment of existing structures and the development of strengthening concepts.
In addition to his work at LEO Consulting, he is a research scientist at Empa.
