Training: Nonlinear Seismic Assessment of Masonry Buildings with 3Muri
This full-day training course was developed to provide engineers with a practical introduction to the nonlinear seismic assessment of masonry buildings. The objective was to cover the complete process of modelling, analysing and evaluating masonry buildings in accordance with SIA 269/8.
The course first introduced the relevant analysis methods, including equivalent lateral force, response spectrum, pushover and nonlinear time-history analyses, and covered the fundamental requirements for seismic assessment according to SIA 269/8. Building on this, the modelling approach in 3Muri was explored in greater detail, including typical failure mechanisms, macroelements, equivalent frame models and the distinction between global and local structural behaviour.
As part of a detailed case study, a masonry building was modelled and analysed. A pushover analysis was performed, capacity curves were evaluated, and displacement capacity and target displacement were determined using the N2 method. In addition, fundamental concepts of seismic retrofitting were introduced and demonstrated using the model.
The training course combines theoretical concepts with a strong emphasis on software-assisted assessment and plausibility checks. It is offered on an ongoing basis and is aimed at professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge of nonlinear analysis methods. To date, more than 70 engineers from over 60 engineering consultancies and public institutions in Switzerland and Austria have attended the course.
