On 6 February 2023, a devastating earthquake struck Türkiye and Syria, leaving behind widespread destruction. ETH Zurich and the Serbian Society for Earthquake Engineering jointly organised a comprehensive earthquake reconnaissance mission to study the various impacts of the disaster and to develop measures to support the affected communities.
Researchers from ETH Zurich (Prof. Michalis Vassiliou, Dr Nikola Blagojevic and Dr Safak Arslantürkoglu), the Serbian Society for Earthquake Engineering (Prof. Marko Marinkovic and Nemanja Krtinic) and Prof. Christoph Butenweg from SDA Engineering actively participated in the mission. The team was supported by our Turkish colleagues, Dr Serife Özata and Dr Zeynep Ünsal Aslan, who contributed their expertise on the regional building stock.
